It was suggested by Boyd (1974) that the mechanisms affecting a shrinkage of wood were fibril angle, degree of lignification, a ratio of early wood to late wood in one growth ring and a cell shape. But it was not clear the effecting degree of factors. In this article, it was discussed the relation between tracheid shrinkage and cell wall shrinkage caused by a moisture content in the cross section of a fast grown tree, New Zealand pine (Pinus radiata). Specimen were treated with warm water at 40℃ for removing residual stress like growing stress and extractives. A shrinkage was measured with a thin specimen, and was dehydrated step by step with ethyl alchol solution to avoid abnormal shrinkage. By dehydration, a tracheid cell wall shrank but a lumen of the tracheid swelled. As a quantity of the swelling was greater than the shrinkage, tracheids swelled consequently. The shrinkage ratio of radial wall to tangential wall was differ from the average wood shrinkage ratio of eleven pinus species in US. The dimension change coefficient of one tracheid was greater than the coefficient of tracheid group contained many tracheids. It was concluded from the results obtained that a dimensional change of wood was affected by the interaction of a dimensional change of adjacent tracheids and by the geometrical arrangement.
