The purposes of this study were to investigate the developmental changes of interpersonal relatedness in a child with autism, and to examine the relation between these changes and her mirror responses. From 4 years and 3 months to 7 years of age, behaviors of the child were observed in a play situation with her parents. By the qualitative changes of the relatedness with her parents, a period of observation was divided into 6 stages. The stages were as follows ; 1st stage : proximity to her father as an instrumental object to attain her purpose, 2nd stage : attachment to her mother as a psychological secure base, 3rd stage : appearance of proximity to her mother as a companion with play situation, 4th stage : awareness to mental states of her mother, 5th stage : awareness to mental states of her own, and two-way relationship, 6th stage : emotional instability resulting from environmental changes, and steady cognitive development. In 5th stage, she became to look at her own mirror image of emotional expressions instead of body movements. It was suggested that mirror responses reflected the interpersonal relatedness in children with autism.
