Foreign language teaching has been playing an important part in the educational system at the Japanese university. It is, however, only at this stage that the students start learning the "second" foreign languages like German, French, Spanish, Chinese and so on, the situation which is different from that of English. With this point in mind, one may ask why or for what purpose the second foreign language should be taught. There has been various discussions on this matter, but one may not deny one aspect that it is part of efforts to acquire the means of better intercultural communications. In this sence, we cannot stay teaching simply about the target language, i. e. teaching pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, etc. ; naturally, we must go a step further. One way to carry on this difficult task will be an effective use of audio-visual teaching materials. This paper reports the results of experiments the author, as a German teacher, has conducted in last 5 years. It shows how conventional classroom sessions, LL sessions, those conducted by the native instructor can effectively be combined, with a particular emphasis on the use of audio-visual materials such as video-films, movies and the like, and what positive or negative factors came out. The total merits and demerits of this teaching program are also considered.
