From the perspectives of articulatory phonetics and phonology, this article attempts to provide an explanation to the question: Why is it difficult to articulate in a foreign language? In this article, the author points out that there are two distinct problematic areas: articulatory difficulty and the other phonological. The former is attributed to the production of speech sounds to which a learner is not accustomed. The latter is due to the difference(s) between the phonological structures of a target language and a learner's mother tongue. Such difficulties may occur even when a learner's mother tongue and his or her target language share the same sounds. In this article, the author presents the case that enhancing awareness of these two problematic areas would not only help learners to more effectively develop proficiency in the target language, but also aid teachers in the task of foreign language instruction. In an effort to validate the argument presented in this article, the author will provide a variety of examples from several different languages that predominately include the following: English, Japanese, Korean and Chinese.
