On the Phonological Structure of English and Katakana writing

As is well known, katakana (hereafter, kana) is used to write loanwords or foreign words in Japanese. There is a general correspondence between kana letters and English sounds, yet the correspondence is not always one to one. Since the inventory of phonemes in English is larger than that of Japanese, in most cases the correspondences are one in English to more than one in Japanese. By examining the correspondences just mentioned and comparing the phonemes (vowels and consonants) of English with those of Japanese, this paper looks into the possibility that the conventional correspondence between kana letters and the sounds of English can be improved, so that learners of English can take advantage of 'proper' kana writing to improve their pronunciation of English.
