We prescribed Kampo drugs (Chinese drugs) to 42 patients (83 prescriptions) with mainly chronic dermatological diseases of unknown etiology, at the outpatient clinic of the dermatology department, Ryukyu University Hospital. Efficacy rate was 60% ( 50/83). Though the observed side effects were few and minor, we should also bear in mind unexpeted side effects that might arise from the combined treatment of Kampo and Western drugs. The medication was considered to be especially effective not only for collagen diseases of unknown etiology, but also for other diseases. In this study, we noticed improvement in the chief complaints of the subjects. Kampo medicine could therefore be as one of the medications for improving the QOL (quality of life). We should study the pharmocological and immunological mechanism of Kampo drugs by scientific techniques. And, we should educate health professional about the benifits of Kampo drugs.
