The aim of the present retrospective study was to evaluate the relationship between oral functions and QOL of patients who had undergone glossectomy. The subjects were 45 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the oral tongue who had been treated after 6 months. All patients were free of recurrence at the time of evaluation. Speech function was analysed using the 100 Japanese syllables. Deglutition was assessed by timed water swallowing test. Mobillty of the tongue was assessed by ultrasound. QOL was assessed by questionnaire. The results of the 45 patients were compared by surgical procedures. In addition, oral function results achived by different QOL-score were evaluated. The results showed a significant correlation of the oral function with QOL-score. From the view point of the patients, postoperative oral function appears to be of major concern and its recovery has been important factor in the assessment of postoperative QOL. These results suggested that taking into account the effects of induction chemotherapy based on the clinico-pathological malignancy surgical procedures would be helpful to improve the oral function and QOL. In conclusion, the functions of swallowing and communication were necessary for satisfactory QOL.
