weakly-acidic chlorohexidine disinfectant
To evaluate the present state of surgical hand-washing in our hospital, we asked doctors and nurses to fill out a questionnaire on the subject. We also investigated whether the new weakly-acidic chlorohexidine-based disinfectant (the new disinfectant) was effective in preventing skin damage caused by hand-washing. According to the survey, all the nurses used 2 brushes and 72% of them had skin damage, while the doctors used 1 to 3 brushes and 37% of them had skin damage. There was a significant difference in skin damage between the nurses and the doctors. Besides, the results suggest that the introduction of the new disinfectant reduced the rate of skin damage of the nurses by 21%. We think that the difference in the number of brushes the doctors used depend on the post-graduate education each doctor received. It is suggested that education on the effective surgical hand-washing should be given to students. We also think excessive hand-washing causes high rate of skin damage. It is suggested that the new disinfectant is effective to prevent skin damage.
