The purpose of this study is development of an infusion solution which is capable of exchanging blood gas, supplying protein nutrients, and maintaining blood osmolarity. In this paper we report the results of a comparative study of a globin transfusion solution and an amino acid transfusfon solution in regard to immunological toxicity, capacity to maintain blood osmolarity, and movements of free amino acid in the blood. 1) Preparation of globin : The modified Jope method was employed. 2) Immunological studies : Anti globin sera of the rabbit and the human were prepared by injecting rabbit globin and human globin as antigens into different rabbits. A flocculation test by dilution method of antibody and an indirect red blood cell agglutination test were carried out by using the rabbit globin and the human globin as antigens. The rabbit isoglobin gave neither positive flocculation precipitate nor corpuscle agglutination, but the human heteroglobin clearly showed antigenantibody reaction. 3) The effects of globin and amino acid transfusion solutions on serum osmolarity : A mature canine with the body weight of 12.5 kg. was anesthetized with ravonal, and plasmapheresis was carried out by injecting the globin solution with erythrocytes of a volume equivalent to the replaced plasma. Before plasmapheresis, and at intervals of 5, 30, 90, 150 minutes, 2 days, and 3 days after plasmapheresis, 5 ml. of blood sample was collected and the movements of serum osmolarity and the level of amino acids in the blood was examined. The results showed that serum osmolarity was slightly elevated by the globin solution whereas it was somewhat decreased by the amino acid solution. 4) Changes in the level of amino acids after transfusions of amino acid and globin solutions : Although differences in the movements of individual amino acids were obseved after the transfusion of the amino acid, the level of amino acids in the blood was increased 5 minutes later, and 30 minutes later it began to return to the same concentration as before the transfusion. On the other hand, before and after the globin transfusion, the changes in amino acid concentration in the blood were not observed, but the globin transfusion tended slightly to increase the amino acid level in the blood from 2 to 5 days later.
