discharge support practices
ward nurses
This study aimed to clarify the discharge support practices of ward nurses and their related factors. We conducted an anonymous, self-administered questionnaire survey at three hospitals in Okinawa Prefecture that provided consent to participate in the study. The survey period was from April to August 2019 and a total of 414 ward nurses were involved in date analysis. To identify factors related to discharge support as practiced by ward nurses, a binary logistic regression analysis was performed. The dependent variable of the regression analysis was the discharge support practices, and the independent variables were the experiences of individual nurses who believed that they were related to discharge support practice with reference to previous studies, and the subscale of the Practice Environment Scale of the Nursing Work Index (PES-NWI). Participation experience in the discharge support training sessions in the hospital (adjusted odds ratio [AOR]:4.05, 95% confidence interval [CI]:2.20-7.45); experience of nursing care at home (AOR:1.93, 95%CI:1.10-3.36); the experience of home transfer patients (AOR:1.90, 95%CI:1.21-2.98); scores on PES-NWI; and a good relationship between nurses and doctors (AOR:2.03, 95%CI:1.17-3.52) were significantly associated with the discharge support practices of ward nurses. To increase the degree of discharge support for ward nurses, experiences of taking charge of patients who have been moved home should be intentionally provided and a system for ward nurses to participate in discharge support workshops established in the hospitals. Moreover, it is necessary to develop a more collaborative environment for ward nurses and doctors.
