Distribution of fertility-restoring genes in native lowland-rice varieties of Japan for Lead Rice male sterility-inducing cytoplasm (Agricultural Experiment Station)

栽培稲Oryza sativa cv. Lead Rice由来の雄性不稔細胞質に対する稔性回復遺伝子の日本水稲在来品種における分布を明らかにするため, 本研究を実施した。Lead Rice細胞質をもち, その他の遺伝的背景が台中65号化した完全雄性不稔系統を母親に, 511の日本水稲在来品種を父親に用いて交雑し, そのF_1における花粉稔性と種子稔性から父親品種が稔性回復遺伝子をもつかどうかを決定した。供試511品種のうち, 175(34%)は稔性回復遺伝子を, 残り336(66%)は非稔性回復遺伝子をもっていた。稔性回復遺伝子をもつ175品種のうち, 150(86%)は京都以南の日本南部に, 25(14%)は京都以北の日本北部に分布した。
In order to know the distribution of fertility-restoring gene(s) in native lowland-rice varieties of Japan for male sterility-inducing cytoplasm of cv. Lead Rice belonging to Oryza sativa, the present investigation was carried. Completely male-sterile strain which was seemed to have the genetic backgrounds of cv. Taichung 65 (japonica) except for male sterility-inducing cytoplasm of Lead Rice was used as female parent and 511 native lowland-rice varieties were as male parent. The pollen and seed fertilities in each F_1 hybrid plant were observed, and was determined whether the fertility-restoring gene(s) in each male parent was present or not. One hundred and seventy-five varieties (ca. 34%) carrying fertility-restoring gene(s) and 336 non-carriers (ca. 66%) were found. Almost all varieties having fertility-restoring gene(s) were distributed in southern Japan (Kyushu, Shikoku, Chugoku, and Kinki districts).
