A sea transportation test from Naha to Hakata was carried out to prove the possibility of the long distance sea transportation of Okinawa grown Muskmelons in summer. The changes in the qualities such as weight loss, respiration rate, sugar content, titrated acidity, colour of peel and hardness of melons were objectively measured by the instrumental methods during the test; and the vibration, impact, ambient temperature and humidity were measured during the transportation. The following resuls were obtained : 1. The temperature in the cargo-hold was 32℃ and 75% relative humidity during voyage. 2. The change in hardness of melons during the transportation was similar to that in normal temperature store. The softening rate in the apex of the melons was faster than that in the cheek. 3. The weight loss of the melons during the transportation was about 1.6%. 4. Straw bags packaging the melons are commonly used for a shock absorber in the Japan mainland, but it is difficult to obtain the straw in Okinawa, and polystyrene paper is easy to use for the shock absorber. 5. By using a colour difference meter, it was possible to observe the change in peel colour of the melons during the test. The b value of the uniform chromaticity scale system was the most superior to express the change in peel colour. 6. Based on the measured respiration rate, we made an attempt to calculate the respiration heat of melons, and 4300kcal/ton/24hr was obtained in ambient temperature 30℃. 7. The magnitude and frequency of in-transit vibration were remarkably less than that in case of the freight car and train. The vibration in-voyage was caused by the pictching. 8. It was found from this test that we can transport Okinawa grown fresh Muskmelons to the Japan mainland, if harvest, disinfection, inspection and shipping are carried out under the assignment program of ships.
