The Coupling of L-O Phonons and Plasmons in Polar Semiconductors

The coupling between longitudinal optical phonons and plasmons in polar semiconductors has been investigated. At the appropriate carrier density (10^<17> ~10^<18> cm^<-3> in 3-5 semiconductor compounds) the frequency of carrier plasma oscillations is comparable with that of the lattice vibrations of the optical modes and remarkable coupling between them is to be expected. In the long wavelength limit the coupled eigen frequencies of the coupled oscillations is obtained by relating the one particle Boltzmann-Vlasov equation as well as the single particle Liouville equation describing the motion of free carriers to the equations of Born and Huang for the optical lattice vibrations in ionic crystals.
