This paper describes the results of the site investigation on durability and deterioration of the reinforced concrete school buildings in Miyako Island. In general, the school buildings are deteriorated in considerable degree due to corrosion of steel bars embeded in concrete. Such condition could be expected by the authers, who had issued a series of reports of investigations on durability of RC bridges in Okinawa Prefecture. The following conclusions are to be mentioned: 1. Approximately half of the school buildings show the indication of deterioration to some or considerable extent in beams and columns. 2. The majority of slabs in outdoor corriders, outdoor stairs, and laves built before 1965 are deteriorated seriouly, and even newly built ones are also deteriorated some. 3. Deterioration of the buildings built after 1965 are seen to be light. 4. RC handrails of outdoor stairs built before 1965 are deteriorated seriously, while ones after then show no deterioration. The reason for the latter is that the stairs are rather new and built indoors. 5. Average of salt contents from the test is to be the amount of 0.29 % of mortar weight, which is considerablly high value. 6. Carbonation of concrete is progressed to certain extent, the portions around reinforcing bars are considered to be carbonaed in older slabs. 7. With high salt contents and large carbonation depth, the reinforcing bars, where only small covering is observed, are potentially corroded. From the characteristics mentioned above, it would be reasonable to conclude that many school buildings are seriously damaged due to corrosion of reinforcing bars and the progress will be expected further in future. Therefore, the introduction of some protective measures seems urgent.
