Bullfighting in Okinawa, started as farmersʼ entertainment, was incorporated into annual events and is becoming one of the prefectureʼs bigger tourism activities. Nowadays, Okinawa is the prefecture where bullfighting is held most frequently. Unlike other prefectures, in Okinawa, it was observed that many persons jointly participate in bull-raising (bull-raising group). It is thought that the success of bullfighting in Okinawa is related to these groups. The purpose of this research is to clarify the benefits of group bullraising in Okinawa. We interviewed members of one bull-raising group. Our questions were (1) how much did the group reduce the economic burden of the bull rearing, (2) what was the role of the group other than reducing the economic burden, and (3) how was the relationship between the bull-owners and the bulls. Our results showed that the many members reduced economic and temporal costs related to bull-raising. Most importantly, the members enjoyed gatherings for bullfighting.
