Strongyloides stercoralis
Immune status was studied on 29 patients with strongyloidiasis and on 10 persons who had a past history of harboring Strongyloides stercoralis. Peripheral leukocytosis was demonstrated in 47.1% of 34 cases examined and eosinophiha was in 32.4%. There were seen relative lymphocytosis ( 38.2% ) and lymphopenia ( 32.4% ). Although T lymphocytes did not show aberrations from normal value, B lymphocytes showed relative decrease in 10 out of 18 cases. Concentartions of serum IgG showed significant changes in many cases. The elevation of IgM and IgA levels was also observed in few cases. The respective mean values, however, were all within normal limits. There was no significant change of serum IgE level. Antibodies to S. stercoralis were detected in 91.7% by the micro-ELISA. The antibody levels, however, were not related to the degree of infestation by the parasite. From the results, it was considered that the humoral and celluar immune responsiveness may be in relatively good status in patients with slight or moderate Strongyloides infection.
