In this experimental case, the fatigue crack tip opening and closing point can be measured using the relation between the following function h and cyclic stress σ:h=ε_y+λε_x, λ=Δε_y/Δε_x, where ε_y and ε_x are the strains measured in the vicinity of the edge of the hole in the center axis, and Δε_y and Δε_x are the ranges of ε_y and ε_x, respectively. Crack initiation at the hole edge can also be detected with the waveform of such a function h. Furthermore, until the crack reaches the hole bottom, the crack length can be evaluated with the range of the subtractive function related to h.
