The overall coloring of the Okinawa mongoose. except for a portion of the ventral surface, is mottled with black and yellowish-white speckles. The contour hairs on the dorsal neck are 12 to 20 mm long, with five or six black and yellowish bands. The head and body length of the mongoose ranges from 255 to 380 mm for males (mean = 325 mm), and from 245 to 310 mm for females (mean = 287 mm). Tail lengths are 205 to 310 mm for males (mean = 256 mm), and 200 to 260 mm for females (mean = 225 mm). These external morphological data and the known historical fact that the mongooses brought to Okinawa were captured at the delta of the Ganges River estuary, leads to the conclusion that the mongoose introduced to Okinawa is most closely related to Herpestes javanicus auropunctatus.
