As for the definition of what an ideal paragraph is, there is fairly general agreement that it is a group of several related sentences that develops one main idea and also that it is usually composed of a topic sentence, supporting sentences, and a concluding sentence. The clarity of the concept, however, seems very doubtful and obscure when various English pafagraphs are analyzed in view of their length and composite parts. Of the 201 expository paragraphs taken from fourteen texts representing newspapers, weekly and monthly magazines, and English textbooks for Japanese EFL learners, only 23 paragraphs are judged as ideal from the viewpoint of length, i.e. the number of sentences contained in each paragraph. Most paragraphs examined in this study are short and judged as exceptional in light of the ideal concept of the English paragraph. Furthermore, qualitative analysis of the 23 ideal examples shows that no concluding sentences are clearly stated in the paragraphs, although many of them contain a topic sentence in various positions. These findings clearly contradict the concept of the ideal Enghsh paragraph and show the great gap between theory and practice. The concept of the English paragraph seems very clear in theory but becomes very obscure if considered practically. This suggests the difficulties we may have in teaching the concept of the English paragraph. In response to this, this paper briefly discusses how to teach paragraph writing/reading in Japanese EFL settings, because teaching the concept of English paragraph is very important for academic essay writing/reading.","subitem_description_type":"Other"},{"subitem_description":"紀要論文","subitem_description_type":"Other"}]},"item_1617186643794":{"attribute_name":"Publisher","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_1522300295150":"ja","subitem_1522300316516":"琉球大学法文学部"}]},"item_1617186702042":{"attribute_name":"Language","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_1551255818386":"jpn"}]},"item_1617186783814":{"attribute_name":"Identifier","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_identifier_type":"HDL","subitem_identifier_uri":"http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.12000/2748"}]},"item_1617186819068":{"attribute_name":"Identifier Registration","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_identifier_reg_text":"10.24564/0002002304","subitem_identifier_reg_type":"JaLC"}]},"item_1617186920753":{"attribute_name":"Source Identifier","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_1522646500366":"ISSN","subitem_1522646572813":"1341-0482"},{"subitem_1522646500366":"NCID","subitem_1522646572813":"AN10471113"}]},"item_1617186941041":{"attribute_name":"Source Title","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_1522650068558":"ja","subitem_1522650091861":"琉球大学欧米文化論集 = Ryudai Review of Euro-American Studies"}]},"item_1617187056579":{"attribute_name":"Bibliographic Information","attribute_value_mlt":[{"bibliographicIssueDates":{"bibliographicIssueDate":"1994-12","bibliographicIssueDateType":"Issued"},"bibliographicIssueNumber":"41","bibliographicPageEnd":"98","bibliographicPageStart":"77"}]},"item_1617258105262":{"attribute_name":"Resource Type","attribute_value_mlt":[{"resourcetype":"departmental bulletin paper","resourceuri":"http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501"}]},"item_1617265215918":{"attribute_name":"Version Type","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_1522305645492":"VoR","subitem_1600292170262":"http://purl.org/coar/version/c_970fb48d4fbd8a85"}]},"item_1617605131499":{"attribute_name":"File","attribute_type":"file","attribute_value_mlt":[{"accessrole":"open_access","filename":"No41p77.pdf","mimetype":"application/pdf","url":{"objectType":"fulltext","url":"https://u-ryukyu.repo.nii.ac.jp/record/2002304/files/No41p77.pdf"},"version_id":"9d9ea7e0-a934-42de-b39c-8958ab7c3a1b"}]},"item_title":"パラグラフ概念の明晰性と暖昧性","item_type_id":"15","owner":"1","path":["1642837731549","1642838405494"],"pubdate":{"attribute_name":"PubDate","attribute_value":"2007-12-23"},"publish_date":"2007-12-23","publish_status":"0","recid":"2002304","relation_version_is_last":true,"title":["パラグラフ概念の明晰性と暖昧性"],"weko_creator_id":"1","weko_shared_id":-1},"updated":"2022-11-29T05:03:01.972651+00:00"}
