In English classrooms in Japan, teachers use the socalled \"eclectic method\" as a result. It is still true that methodological trends basically shift according to the most popular theories at the time of teaching. For example, English education in Japan recently has undertaken a major reform, introducing the teaching of English in public elementary schools and further encouraging teachers to use mainly English in classrooms.\\nIn this paper, I argue that teachers, school administrators, and policy makers must not underestimate the magnitude of changes in their language-teaching policies and methods. That argument leads us to realize the necessity of examining empirically the effects of learning activities such as \"reading-aloud,\" \"rapid-material listening,\" \"shadowing,\" and \"dictation,\" among others.
