The study finds that through comparison of successive birth-cohorts, both later age of school completion (due to spread of higher education) and later age of marriage resulted in a delayed transition, retaining almost the same duration of a transition period. Order of the events has always been uniform through the second half of the last century. Leaving home used to synchronize well with the first job among those who grew up in Japan's economic booming era in the 1960s. Today, however, it synchronizes more with the first marriage among the younger cohorts.
