In this paper, in order to estimate the in situ strength of carbonate soils based on the grading of sediments, the effect of a content of gravelly component on the shear strength of carbonate sand was investigated in laboratory. A series of triaxial compression tests was carried out on the reconstituted sand with various content of gravelly component. The effect of the content of gravelly component on shear strength is significant more than that of the size of gravel. The internal friction angle at failure increases with the increase in content of gravelly component and remains to be constant over the content of gravelly component of 40%.
