In this rocal soil, kumejima soil which is residual soil of andesite, has a different physical and engineering properties comparatively with usual kunigami Maaji. In this report, the characteristics of compacted Kumejima soil and their application to the fill material were investigated. The results obtained are as follows. 1. The soil belongs to clay, and includes the clay perticles of 75 percent. 2. Values of the specific gravity are relatively small in Kunigami Maaji. 3. Maximum dry density is low in degree of 1.25g/cm^3,and even if the compaction energy increase, it increases a little in dry density. 4. Optimum moisture content is high about 40% and natural moisture content is higher 5-10% than optimum moisture content. 5.
