The understanding of cell growth rate is an important problem to analyze the grown-up process of the woody plant. There is a destructive way of the marking method in the cell growth. measuring However, the measuring skill is difficult for this method and measurement takes long. This method is disadvantagous in technique and in time to apply to the analysis study of the grown-up process of plants for the above reasons. It is desirable to measure the grown-up rate in the non-destructive method of a growing plant. This report had a purpose of getting knowledge about the basic factor to examine an non-destructive method. It examined the changes of the diameter of a vessel and area fraction of vessels of woody plant. It is considered theoretically that the area fraction is the index which shows relative growth among elements. It is described the experimental results. The area fraction of the ray parenchyma cells is constant and is unrelated to the grown-up rate. The area fraction of the vessel changed with the vessel diameter but the relation of both depends on the tree species. Investigated tree species was classified into three groups based on the relation of both factors. Prior group-Kusunoki (Cinnamomum camphora)-had constsnt area fraction irrespective of the vessel diameter and the grown-up rate was constant. 2nd group-Isunoki (Distylium racemosum), Hounoki (Magnolia obovata)-had constant vessel diameter but the area fraction changed. Grown-up rate is ruled by the dividing times of cell in the cambial zone. 3rd group-Yabunikkei (Cinnamomum japonica), Shibanikkei (Cinnamomum doede rleinii), Katsura (Cercidiphyllum japonicum)-had in the proportional relation between the vessel diameter and the area fraction. The grownup rate is ruled by both with the divideing times and enlargement of the cells in the cambial zone. The vessel and the wood fiber are the main element of the broadleaf wood.
