Nansei Shoto has been the chief producing district of Wagyu cattle in Japan so far. The objective of this study is to analyze the present status of beef cattle production in Nansei Shoto and find out the problems and point out the way of improvements. Beef production in Nansei Shoto is unfavorably located because of a considerable distance away from the main domestic consumer regions. Feed crops such as grass grow very well in Nansei Shoto where in the subutropical zones all the year round. Being the dry field zone, the form of Nansei Shoto's agricultural management is the combined management in which production of beef cattle is carried out together with sugar cane production. The number of farms raising beef cattle in Nansei Shoto has been decreasing in resent years. However, the number of beef cattle raising per farm has been increasing. Almost all of the beef cattle raising farms in Nansei Shoto are small in size and raising Wagyu cattle breeding mainly.
