The acid phosphatase hydrolyzing p-nitrophenyl phosphoric acid (NPP), from the extract of cane stalks, was partially purified by ammonium sulfate fractionation and acid treatment. This enzyme had an optimum pH of 5.5 and almost no activity at alkaline areas. It had Km value for NPP of 0.77mM and an optimum temperature of 50℃ and was stable at temperatures lower than 40℃. Magnesium, cupric and manganese ions in 1.16mM showed no effect on the enzyme activity. However, the inhibition of the activity by calcium and mercuric ions and EDTA in 1.16mM was remarkable, but that by fluoride ion in 1.16mM was moderate. EDTA and mercuric ion in 0.11mM, on the other hand, did not inactivate the enzyme.
