The formation of ⊿^1-pyrroline-5-carboxylate was shown by amino acid analysis and paper electrophoresis of the reaction product. These findings revealed that the terminal amino group of L-ornithine is transaminated to yield ⊿^1-pyrroline-5-carboxylate. Therefore, glutamate-γ-semialdehyde is produced directly from L-ornithine.
