Then, swelling tests were carried out on the samples which had been air-dried. The conclusions are as follows. (1) Swelling pressure and deformation are dependent on the degree of dryness of the specimen. (2) Shimajiri mudstone has a anisotropic properties in swelling pressure and deformation.
