The important changes took place and evaluations for them are the followings : 1. Before the reversion, almost all of hog and pork marketing functions were done by individual slaughterers. After the reversion, agricultural cooperatives started to perform functions of assembling and forwarding hogs from farmers to the slaughterhouse. Agricultural cooperatives put these functions together regionally, and have been given farmers guidance in producing hogs to meet hog (pork) demand. 2. There were 31 slaughterhouses throughout Okinawa before the reversion. After consolidating, there presently exist only 12. Accordingly, number of hogs slaughtered per slaughterhouse was increased. Also, individual slaughterers were replaced by specialized slaughterers employed in slaughterhouses. 3. Transactions between individual slaughterers and farmers are still based on live hog. On the other hand, transactions between agricultural cooperatives and farmers are based on carcass. Before the reversion, farmers had to sell their hogs at the price which slaughterers want to set. Slaughterers were always getting advantage from hog transactions. After the reversion, farmers can take carcass prices for a yardstick of their live hog transactions. Entering agricultural cooperatives into hog marketing contributed to reduce regional and among farmers hog price differences existed before. 4.
