The results obtained were as follow : The effect of alkali treatment of bagasse on the growth of Asp. awamori and culture conditions were investigated. The alkali treatment markedly stimulated the growth of the strain. The strain grew well in a liquid medium containing alkali-treated bagasse and alkali-extract of bagasse as the sole carbon source. The maximal growth was obtained when the bagasse was treated with 0.5% NaOH solution at 120\u2103 for 20 min. When the strain was cultured on the bagasse having various particle sizes, little difference in the growth was observed. Ammonium sulfate (0.3%) was the most effective nitrogen sources.
