The transaminase activity of the cells was enhanced greatly by addition of β-alanine to the growth medium. 2. In the enzyme reaction, both taurine and pyruvate as substrate were required to produce α-alanine. The formation of α-alanine proceeded linearly as a function of incubation time and cell concentration. Pyruvate was one of the best amino acceptor.
