Compression tests were done on cylindrical specimens. The conclusions are summarized as follows : 1) The type of failure is brittle failure in most cases. 2) Unconfined compressive strength ranges from 17.40kg/(cm)^2 to 41.56kg/(cm)^2. 3) Unconfined compressive strength is affected by natural water content and its strength is high as natural water content decreases. 4) Relation between unconfined compressive strength and modulus of deformation is shown in Fig. 10,but there does not exist linear relation. 5) When natural mudstones are inundated, their strength fall due to sucking of water.
