This study was done to investigate into the drought resistance of pineapple. Experiments for this study were done on the grounds of the University of the Ryukyus, Naha, Okinawa. Smooth Cayenne variety was used for the experiments, and plants were cultivated in pots with sand or loamy soil both from the northern part of Okinawa. 2. The results are as follows : (1) The vegetative growth rate of pineapple is slowed down as sprinkling interval is long, although the crop has strong resistance against drought. (2) Pineapple grows to some extent in loamy soil with soil moisture as low as about 10%. The growth, however, almost stops as the soil moisture falls to 4% to 5%. (3) The roots of pineapple in one of these experiments looked almost perished as soil moisture was extremely low, but the plant revived and started growing again as water was given. The vegetative growth and reproductive growth, however, were both extremely slowed down afterward.
