The nutritional survey was conducted by the joint work of the two groups, one medically-oriented and one dietary-oriented research group. The survey was conducted on the 23rd of August, 1968 at Nishi Elementary School in Ie island. 2. In regard to dietary survey, the total intakes of foods were very low showing 39% of the requirements for boys and 44% for girls as indicatited in previous reports. Therefore, all nutrients intakes except Fat of girls were very low when compared with the requirements. The intake percent of all food groups were low and specially following food groups were low showing 2-22% : Potatoes, Sugar, Milk, Green and yellow vegetables and Fruits for both boys and girls. Fish and Meats for girls were also low showing 34%. The percentage of animal protein to the total protein intakes was also low showing 37% for boys and 36% for girls. The protein scores were 82 for boys and 80 for girls, and the first limiting amino acid was the totals of sulfur containing amino acid. The first food sources of Calories, Protein, and Vitamin B_1 were Cereals and those of Calcium, Iron and Vitamin B_2 were Animal foods. 3. In regard to physical measurements, both boys and girls of Nishi Elementary School were found to be superior to the whole Ryukyus average in hight and weight. However. the percentage of the diseased. was about one-third of the examined pupils showing 30.5% and the percentage of the diseased was high among girls than boys.
