Two samples of soils (sample A : LL=58.3%, PL=29.9%, sample B : LL=79.3%, PL=51.3%) in Okinawa were compacted; and for each soil, four specimens were prepared at different water content and density. They were trimmed and placed in a 6cm×2cm oedometer. The specimen was loaded under incremental load in the compression test. In the soaking test the specimen was soaked under various constant loads. The amount of compression of the compacted sample on the dry-side of optimum water content is smaller than that of the compacted sample on the wet-side. The compression of compacted partly saturated soil is divided into three parts, namely : instant compression, primary compression and secondary compression. The compression of compacted sample on the dry-side is mainly due to the instant and secondary compression. On the other hand, the compression on the wet-side is due to the primary compression. The compacted sample on the dry-side is much affected by soaking under constant load, but the effect is less on the wet-side.
