F_1 hybrids produced a higher grain\nyield per plant than the respective mid-parents in both F_1 cross-combinations. Average heterosis value for yield was 1.14.\nHigher yield in the F_1 plants was mainly due to the higher number of spikelets per panicle. Dry matter accumulation in the\nF_1 hybrids was higher than that of the mid-parents in both hybrid combinations and it was associated with a higher number\nof tillers and larger leaf area. Post anthesis decline in leaf area at the ripening stage was faster in the F_1 hybrids compared\nwith the inbred parent cultivars.
