University of the Ryukyus}, month = {Sep}, note = {Maritime meteorological and oceanographic observations were carried out using a ferry service between Okinawa and Taiwan, crossing the Kuroshio in the East China Sea. The ferry crosses the Kuroshio almost every 10 days. An Automatic Weather Station (AWS) on the ferry measured the meteorological elements (wind speed and direction, air temperature, humidity, solar radiation), sea surface temperature and sensor-arm orientation. Observations started in October 1990 and continued until the retirement of the ferry (Hiryu 3) in March 1996 (Observation Period 1). This paper (Part 1) describes the observations in Period 1, including the process of system maintenance and sensor calibration. The detailed analysis using the observed data will be given in other papers. The ferry service was restarted using a new ferry (Hiryu 21), and observation recommenced in August 1996, and is continuing (Observation Period 2)., 紀要論文}, pages = {73--95}, title = {Maritime Meteorological and Oceanographic Observation crossing the Kuroshio, in the East China Sea, using a Ferry Service between Okinawa and Taiwan : Part 1 Ferry 'Hiryu 3', 1990-1996}, year = {2001} }
