Using such textbooks, however, always entails the risk of compelling students to be culturally assimilated. This risk should be always born in mind in teaching Japanese reading via textbooks dealing withJapanese culture.This study has suggested how to teach learners of the Japanese language reading strategies to understand cultural diversities through texts and to evaluate different cultures critically and flexibly. Such reading strategies make our students studying at University of the Ryukyus aware of the significance of learning in Okinawa by bringing them to recognize the gap between Okinawan and standardized Japanese cultures. Furthermore, such reading strategies enable students to critically read texts written on the standardized cultures of their own. Reading the passages with such contents gives learners an opportunity to reflect their own experiences and to verbalize them in Japanese.
