 note = {The presence of U.S. miliatry bases on Okinawa has been a political, economic, and social issue in Japan. Japan's notinal security ihas depended on U.S. presence, particularly on Okinawa. This aritcle focuses on new trends in the U.S. forward-deployment strategy, and re-evaluates the mission and roles of the armed forces on Okinawa. It also emphasizes the dynamics of domestic politics in dealing with the base issue.
