Each survey was conducted on different date at an interval of approximately 7 months: the first survey in November, 1962 and the second survey in June, 1963. The subjects were 559 pupils of a public elementary school, 283 boys and 276 girls, of ages ranging from 9 to 11 years. Findings of the dietary survey are summarized as follows. 1) 15% of total Calories is obtained from protein, 18% from fat and approximately 67% from carbohydrate. This proportion indicates a relatively good intake pattern. However, quantity of food intake is small and marked deficiencies of necessary diets are generally observed when compared with the nutritional requirement and with the requirement of each food group. 2) Dietary deficiencies are especially noticeable as to the intakes of vitamin A, Iron, Calories and summer time intake of Vitamin C. 3) Also noticeable are deficiencies of sugar and fats which provide energy; green and yellow vegetables and potatoes which provide vitamins and minerals; and milk and eggs which provide animal protein, vitamins and minerals. Only one food group that showed enough intake was other vegetables.
