He could n'lt, however,\\nrecognize the lumination of the fungi then. Subsequently, in November, 1958, the\\nwriter found the same fungi on rotton wood of a latifoliate or broad-leaved tree in\\nthe forest of Onna-dake (375 m.), which he cultivated. The cultivation experiments\\nenabled him to make the following observations:\\n1. The illumination of the fungus was recognized on the hypha, stipe, and pileus.\\nThe spore, however, did not illuminate. Among sixty-four carpophores observed, the\\nfourty-five illuminated and the rest did not. Even those most illuminous tended to\\nlose the illumination gradually with the passage of time, and eventually lost it altogether.\\nThe fungi cultivated in a darkened box with a dim light within illuminated just as\\nmuch as those cultivated ordinarily. This suggests that the illumination of the fungus\\ndoes not depend on the sun light.\\nThe illuminous part, even when excised from the rest of the carpophore, kept illuminating. When it was crushed with a pressure, the illumination disappeared. The\\nliquid obtained by crushing it did not illuminate either.\\n2. In the present cultivation experiments, a type of abnormality was observed,\\nwhich appeared that two carpophores overlapped on one another.\\n3. When cultivated in a darkened box with a dim light within, etiolation occured,\\nthe pileus becoming smaller, the stipe becoming longer, and the fine sillky white hair scattered on the stipe being elongated. When the illumination in the box was increased, the pileus became larger and a recovery of etiolation was observed.\\n4. When a small hole was made on one side of the box to allow a soft light in,\\nphototropism of the carpophore was observed, but the carpophore died without developing\\nto be large.\\n5. During the cultivation experiments of carpophores between November, 1958 and\\nJuly 1960, the temperature at the of generation ranged between 13' C and 28' C. Generation of carpophores was observed though experimental cultivation during the following four seasons: spring, summer, autumn, and winter.
