 note = {It is a vital need of today to establish a comprehensive highway transportation plan for the future needs in highway use in a community regardless wether it is a city or a nation. Such a comprehensive plan calls for good understanding of historical development of highways and their use in the past before it being followed by a new plan for the future. To the author's knowledge, however, it seems that there has not been a study whitch dealt with the development of roads and road transportation in the Ryukyus as its main subject. With such understanding the author and his coorparators have started a study under the title given above. The study is not complete and still going on.
