 note = {This paper examines two allomorphic verbs X-jiru and X-zuru based on Balanced Corpus of Contemporary Written Japanese (BCCWJ). These two forms have been treated as if they appear in any contexts interchangeably; however, close examination by applying the cluster analysis to the frequency of them in BCCWJ, it will be shown that their appearance is rather biased: X-zuru characterizes the genres of social science and philosophy. On the other hand, the examination of verbal collocations shows that among the three verbs shoo-zuru (to occur),jun-zuru (to follow, to be based on), mei-zuru (to order), shoo-zuru is most often used as an intransitive verb and it is preceded by the word mondai (problem). Moreover, collocation reveals that in more than 50% of the usage of jun-zuru, it is preceded by pronouns such as kore (this) or korera (these). Also it will be discussed that the use of X-zuru forms is one of the reasons that the style found in these two genres makes the readers archaic/ authoritarian/ dogmatic.
