The Shimajiri Formation was sedimented in the sea during the tertiary period, and it consists of mudstone (silty clay) layer,sandstone (fine silty soils) layer and silty tuff layer. The more areas of middle and southern Okinawa-jima are covered with those layers and their weathered soils. The formation is usually taken as soft rocks, but it is errosive and susceptible of weathering. The ground failures (creeps and slides) of these areas are caused by weathering of the rocks,surface water and seepage flow from rainfall, and groundwater flow in the fromation. To prevent the disaster from the failures, the geomorphologic, geologic and engineering characteristics of the formation must be investigated and the work is under way., 紀要論文}, pages = {103--117}, title = {第三紀島尻層における地すべり・崩壊について}, year = {1974} }
