However, on May 15 1972, the sovereignty over the area was returned to Japan following the conclution of Reversion Treaty between U.S. and Japan. Since then, together with other social and economic conditions, the highway traffic method was changed to fit newly imposed Japanese laws. The change, right-way to left, was performed exactly at 6 a.m. on July 30 1978. The change of traffic method seen on the islands was not the first experience in the world. In 1967 and following years Sweden, Finland and Iceland experienced left-to-right change. However, as the author sees it, the right-to-left change performed on Okinawa islands is a case rarely seen before in other countries in the world.
