Kānepu‘u, was published as a serial in the Hawaiian language press. This is the only known written version of this hi/story from the oral tradition. The central relationship in the story is that of Hāwea, the powerful grandmother who can communicate with the spirit world, and Hāmanalau, her seemingly passive and powerless granddaughter. This paper will examine the ways that Kānepu‘u represented gender roles in the main characters of Hāwea, Hāmanalau, the boy Kaukanapōki‘i and lesser male characters. The paper will also examine gender roles as represented in the several marriage ceremonies described in the story.
