Currently, CBDs in various, often global cities are undergoing distinctive spatial transformations associated with the provision of tourism related spaces, facilities, and infrastructures. Consequently, CBDs are now sites of conflict as well as opportunity for both business and tourism. It is therefore necessary to understand the nature of this emerging urban phenomenon, especially considering the importance of CBDs for cities and nations, in addition to business enterprises (i.e. political and economic spaces), and also for urban culture, economy and image (i.e. living spaces). However, theoretical explanations of the ongoing tourismification of CBD are almost nonexistent. In order to promote understanding of this recent phenomenon, this study investigates current discussions of urban tourism - in particular those concerning the development of tourism-related activities and problems in urban central areas. Through the investigation of the existing literature, this paper identifies the concepts of urban morphology, cultural consumption, production, and governance needed both to grasp the nature of the tourismification of CBDs and to explore possible theoretical approaches to the topic. The first of these concepts is necessary for researchers to recognize that the image and design of cultural and economic landscapes is fundamental to the investigation of the spatial implications of tourismified CBDs. The second concept is necessary for researchers to understand the nature of recent CBDs as cultural commodities. The third reveals that tourismifying CBDs can be analyzed through several modes of production, including most notably tourism infrastructure. The final concept, governance, requires researchers to clarify the area of tourism impact as a fundamental dimension of urban transformation.
