The country is also known for her fierce battle of Peleliu Island in WWII. In 2012, Rock Islands Southern Lagoon, Palau's pristine islands and waters have been designated as one of World Heritage Sites. Recently, tourists from Asian nations (Japan, Taiwan, Korea, China) has been increasing and various negative impacts has been observed. Thus, nation-wide tourism planning and mplementation has to be needed. This article discusses current conditions and problems of Palau's tourism and suggests directions for sustainable tourism based on interviews, focus group meetings, and, literature reviews.
