The present essay explores how to place them in broad perspective by offering a selection of literary works in English. It refers to a variety of short stories not only by native speakers of English but also by others, including: The Brothers Grimm, Franz Kafka, Ludmilla Petrushevskaya, and such national and/or international award-winning writers of Japan as Yasunari Kawabata, Mieko Kawakami, and Haruki Murakami. This paper underscores the need to contextualize the selected works in their own terms. Several examples of contextual reading are thus provided to illustrate literatures in English as an interconnected whole.
