The events main purpose is to gather Okinawan immigrants and their descendants back to their motherland to have an exchange. There was a concern that due to the Tohoku Disaster the number of foreign participants of the 5th Worldwide Uchinanchu Festival held October of 2011 would decrease; but rather it increased to a record high number of 7,363 participants. Through the support of the 5th Worldwide Uchinanchu Festival Planning Committee, the Ryukyu University research group was able to conduct a survey targeting the participants of the festival.
